Inzaghi: Inter Mentality Beat Bayern, But Job Not Finished

Mind Over Muscle: Inzaghi Applauds Inter’s Belief After Bayern Blow

Inter Milan boss Simone Inzaghi has praised his players’ mentality following a dramatic 2-1 first-leg victory over Bayern Munich in their UEFA Champions League 2025 quarter-final clash, but issued a reminder: “It’s only halftime.”

An 88th-minute winner by Davide Frattesi, just three minutes after Thomas Müller’s equaliser, earned Inter a rare win at the Allianz Arena—Bayern’s first home UCL defeat since 2021.

“We knew Bayern’s numbers,” Inzaghi said post-match.
“We did something important. But it means nothing if we don’t finish it at the San Siro.”

Mental Strength and Tactical Discipline Key to Victory

Inzaghi credited the performance to Inter’s character and tactical intelligence, especially under sustained pressure from a Bayern side that dominated possession but failed to break Inter’s resilient structure.

“We showed depth and quality. Bayern tried to press, but we came with personality,” Inzaghi noted.
“That second goal? We played it through them. Not luck—quality football and belief.”

Despite conceding an equaliser, Inter regrouped and responded instantly—a moment Inzaghi called “a sign of champions.”

Inside Inter’s Game Plan: Press-Resistant and Precise

Inzaghi revealed the strategy was clear:

  • Disrupt Bayern’s rhythm through early possession

  • Attack Bayern’s fullbacks in transition

  • Mentally reset after every Bayern push

“They are dangerous when they have the ball. So we had to take it off them—be bold, play our way. And we did.”

Inter have now conceded just three goals in 11 UCL matches this season—a testament to their defensive maturity and game management.

Second Leg Mentality: One Foot in, One Battle Left

With the return leg at the San Siro looming, Inzaghi emphasized focus and humility:

“We are not through. Bayern are strong, with history, and they’ll come with everything.
This team must be sharper, tougher, and even more determined next week.”

What’s Next: Barcelona or Dortmund Await

The winner of this tie faces either Barcelona or Borussia Dortmund in the semi-finals. But Inzaghi is not looking ahead:

We can’t think of who comes next. If we don’t finish the job, we don’t deserve to be in the semis.”
